Nokia 6230i Mobile Review

Mobile Review-Nokia 6230i

With an FM radio, a MP3 player, and a built-in camera, it had a lot going for it. This time, Nokia 6230i device that features a much better display and, of course, a 1.3 megapixel camera, Nokia 6230i is in Symbian 40 series lineup.
Nokia 6230i contains upto 32MB internal memory.
The 6230i is a triband (900/1800/1900 MHz) phone with support for EDGE networks, and also features Push to Talk (PTT).
Measuring 103mm x 44mm x 20mm (4.06″ x 1.73″ x .79″), the 6230i at first glance looks exactly like the old 6230. Only on closer inspection will one notice the additional button in the middle of the D-Pad, and the slightly larger display.

Nokia 6230i

The design of Nokia 6230i is almost identical to its predecessor.
It weighs 99g but is still tolerable and won’t weigh your pockets down
The 6230i’s new 65K colour TFT display is bright and sharp, readable under harsh sunlight, and reproduces colours beautifully. As a result of the higher resolution, fonts appear smoother, and the ‘extra small’ font while viewing SMS is now readable, unlike in previous Series 40 phones where the small fonts required you to squint to read them. You can view 6 lines of text on the new screen.
The keys still feel wobbly and are moved about too easily – especially the 5-key. As a result of this, some keypresses were not registered while typing SMS or playing games.
On the left of the phone you will find the volume buttons. The camera lens on the back is raised from the rest of the cover, and that piece wraps around the side to merge with the loudspeaker. Just beside the speaker lies the infrared port.. The power button at the top is large and easy to press. It has a nice feel to it and isn’t too stiff or too loose. You will find the pop-port connector on the bottom of the phone along with the power socket.
The MMC card slot is located under the battery compartment like in the previous 6230. However, for users with multiple cards containing videos and MP3 files, it would pose a problem, as they will have to switch off their phone and remove the battery before being able to swap their memory cards. The covers of the 6230i are removable.
The Series 40 UI in the 6230i has been slightly revamped, made to look nicer with 3D icons, and also to accommodate the higher resolution of its new display. The available memory on the 6230i has been bumped up to 32MB, but only about 24MB is accessible by the user. With the bundled 64MB MMC, there is enough memory to store a few MP3s along with your collection of photos, depending on resolution.
The 6230i delivered excellent voice quality during calls. You wont experience any dropped calls or poor reception, and calls were loud and clear. The speakerphone worked well and had good volume too.
The 6230i has 5 ringing profiles available, all of them user editable. The profiles can be used as timed profiles, if you like, so that you can have the phone revert back to the normal profile from your meeting profile once your appointment is over.
You can also attach voice commands to certain functions, such as changing profiles, accessing your call register, activating the infrared port, and there’s even a command to allow the phone to give out audible signals, telling you how much battery power is left, and even how good the GSM signal is.
Battery life was fair. The phone lasted about 3.5 days before having to be recharged. This was with roughly 30 minutes of calls each day and quite a lot of SMSing, gaming, and also GPRS usage. However, with Bluetooth turned on, the battery was drained rather quickly.
The Nokia 6230i supports GPRS and EDGE data networks, where available. It also has an infrared port and Bluetooth support. With that said, the Nokia 6230i is a pretty well connected phone.
The 6230i comes with a fairly extensive set of pre-installed applications. Most of the applications seem to have been carried over from the previous 6230, with a few minor improvements and bug fixes. Other applications that are included are Wallet, Converter II, World Clock II, Calculator, Countdown Timer, Stopwatch, and Translator.
There were 3 games included in my test 6230i. They were Golf Tour, Street Race, and Space Mahjong. Golf Tour is interesting but is a tough game to beat. Street Race is a decent game with 2D graphics.
The 6230i’s 1.3 megapixel camera creates images in 4 different resolutions: 1280 x 1024, 640 x 480, 320 x 240, and 160 x 120. There is a night mode, but other than that you are limited to selecting from one of three quality levels. The night mode made pictures look bluish and blurry. There is a digital zoom function, but it is entirely worthless.
The 6230i’s camera can record video clips. You have the option of shooting clips in either High quality (176 x 144) or Low quality (128 x 96) mode. There is a mute function that allows you to turn off the microphone when recording a clip.
The 6230i also features a built-in FM radio, which requires the user to attach the included headset that functions as the antenna. You can choose manual tuning or automatic tuning to find your favourite radio channel, and you can save up to 20 channels in the phone’s memory. You can choose either stereo or mono output for the FM radio.
